Master ClipKeyboard in 5 Minutes

From keyboard setup to advanced features, everything on one page.

Before you download

Just try it right here

No download needed. The keyboard below really works. Tap to type, fill in a blank, and make one of your own.

ClipKeyboard

Give it a tap

Tap any key and it lands in the field above.

Keyboard height

The same setting you get in the app. Tap one and the keyboard below changes.

Make one of your own

Give it a name and content, and a key appears on the keyboard. Put braces in the content, like {name}, and it becomes a template that asks you to fill the blank each time.

This sandbox runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere; it stays on this device. The app works the same way.

STEP 01

Getting Started: Add Keyboard & Allow Full Access

Due to iOS security, you must activate the keyboard yourself. Takes about a minute.

Add the Keyboard

  1. iOS Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard…
  2. Pick ClipKeyboard from the list

Allow Full Access

  1. On the same screen, tap ClipKeyboard you just added
  2. Toggle on Allow Full Access
Full Access lets the keyboard read memos stored in the main app. Your data stays on your device only.

Switch to the Keyboard

In any app, open the keyboard and long-press the 🌐 icon on the bottom-left to pick ClipKeyboard.

STEP 02

Save & Edit Memos

Save phrases you type often and pull them up from the keyboard anywhere.

Add a Memo

  1. Tap the + button on the top-right of the main screen
  2. Enter a title and content (content is the text that will be typed)
  3. Pick a category to organize
  4. Save, and it's instantly available in the keyboard

Use from the Keyboard

Emojis, line breaks, and markdown are typed as-is. Long email signatures? No problem.
The keyboard mirrors the app: favorite memos appear in pink, secure memos show a lock before the title, and the category you're viewing appears as a large title at the top.

Image Memos & Text Recognition

Tapping a memo with an attached photo copies it to the clipboard as an image. Great for business cards or receipts. You can also pull just the text you need from a captured image with text recognition (OCR). The free tier supports up to 5 image memos; Pro removes the limit.

Swipe to Pick from a Photo

Stop retyping account numbers and phone numbers off paper. Take a photo, then swipe your finger over just the part you need and only that text becomes the value.

  1. While creating a shortcut, tap Scan text in above the content field and choose Take a photo or From photo library
  2. Swipe your finger across the text in the photo. Everything your finger passes over is highlighted in yellow
  3. Picked something by mistake? Swipe over it again with the Eraser. Pinch with two fingers to zoom in on small text
  4. Tap Use this text and what you picked goes into the shortcut content
Turn on the line-breaks button for values that span lines, like a two-line address. Leave it off and an account number split across two lines joins into one.
The photo is never saved. The text is taken out and the photo is discarded. Recognition happens entirely on your device, so neither the photo nor the text is ever sent anywhere. If swiping is hard, use Pick by line at the top right to choose from a list of the recognized lines.

Secure Memos (Lock)

Lock sensitive memos to protect them. Long-press a memo and choose Lock as secure memo: it's stored encrypted on your device (the key syncs safely via your iCloud Keychain), and opening or unlocking it requires Face ID / Touch ID. Locked memos are marked only by a lock before the title in both the list and the keyboard, keeping their card color. This is a Pro feature.

STEP 03

Templates & Placeholders

Leave slightly-varying parts as {variable} and fill them in when you use it.

Syntax

Variable names inside curly braces { } become placeholders. Examples:

How to Use

  1. Tap a template memo: a value-input sheet slides up from the bottom
  2. Fill in the blanks and tap Copy at the top-right; the completed sentence is copied
  3. Values you've entered are remembered, making the next selection faster (e.g. a history of "name" values)

Turn an Existing Memo into a Template

Long-press a regular memo and choose Make Template: the original stays as-is while a new template memo opens pre-filled with its content. Drop {variable} wherever you want and save; the cursor lands right after each variable so you can keep typing.

Date/time auto-variables let you pick Today, Tomorrow, Next week, In two weeks, or a specific date: tapping substitutes the real date and copies it.
Variables with the same name are shared across templates. Values entered for {name} are suggested in other templates' {name}.
STEP 04

Smart Clipboard

Automatically classifies copied text so you can pull it back up anytime.

How It Works

Sensitive items (card, IBAN, Tax ID) are masked on display. The real value is copied only when tapped.
STEP 05

Combos: Multiple Memos at Once

A macro-like feature that types name, email, phone in sequence.

Great For

Create a Combo

Combos are now built right inside your memo list, not on a separate screen. Add follow-up content to a memo and it becomes a combo.

  1. In the main app, tap + to create a new memo and enter the first content
  2. Add follow-up memos for the content to be entered in order
  3. Set the delay (in seconds) between steps
  4. Save: it appears as a combo in your memo list, and tapping it in the keyboard types the steps in order
Tapping a combo memo copies it right away and lays out the step values that will be typed, in order, in a half-sheet preview. The combos, categories, and memos you already made are kept exactly as they were across updates.
Delays under 0.3s may exceed what the system can keep up with. 0.5~1s is recommended.
STEP 06

macOS Menu Bar App

The same memos, clipboard, and combos on Mac (via Mac Catalyst).

Install

Included in the same App Store purchase. Search ClipKeyboard in the Mac App Store. Sign in with the same Apple ID to sync data via iCloud automatically.

Mac-Only Features

Save a phrase on Mac and it appears instantly in the iPhone keyboard, and vice versa.
STEP 07

iCloud Backup & Restore

Back up to iCloud so you don't lose memos when changing devices or reinstalling.

Back Up

  1. App Settings → iCloud Backup
  2. Tap Back Up Now: manual backup
  3. Toggle Auto Backup: saves every 5 minutes on change

Restore

  1. Install the app on a new device, sign in with the same Apple ID
  2. Settings → iCloud Backup → Restore
Restoring replaces all current memos, clipboard, and combos with the backup. This cannot be undone.
Unlimited storage. Image memos are included in the backup.
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The keyboard doesn't show my memos

"Allow Full Access" is likely off. Check iOS Settings → General → Keyboard → ClipKeyboard → Allow Full Access.

Copied text isn't showing in history

iOS restricts other apps from auto-reading the clipboard. Open the app once, then switch to the keyboard to sync.

My IBAN was classified as a card number

Similar digit patterns can cause misclassification. Long-press the item to change the type manually, or re-copy with spaces/hyphens (e.g. 1234-5678-...).

How do I delete remembered template values?

In the template edit view, tap a placeholder to see the "saved values" list. Swipe to delete individually.

Combos get cut off / only partial input

Increase the delay between steps (0.5~1s recommended). Different apps have different input-rate tolerances.

Mac and iPhone data won't sync

Make sure both devices are signed in with the same Apple ID and iCloud Drive is enabled. You can also manually sync via iCloud Backup → Back Up Now in the app.

Where is my data stored?

All memos are stored on your device (App Group container). With iCloud Backup enabled, they're stored encrypted in your own iCloud. The developer never collects your memo contents, only anonymous usage statistics (such as how often features are used) to improve the app.

What's the difference between Free and Pro?

The free tier covers 10 memos, 3 combos, 3 templates, 50 clipboard items, 5 image memos, and theme customization. Pro (one-time purchase) lifts every limit to unlimited and adds iCloud backup and biometric lock.

How do I start the 7-day free trial?

On the Pro upgrade screen in the app, you'll see a Start 7-day free trial button. Tap it once and all Pro features unlock for 7 days (one-time only). When it ends, the app falls back to the free tier automatically: no penalty if you don't purchase.

How do I lock a secure memo?

Long-press a memo and choose Lock as secure memo. Locked memos are stored encrypted on your device, with the key synced safely via your iCloud Keychain. Opening or unlocking requires Face ID / Touch ID. (Pro feature)
