App Design Lab
Design study that goes beyond reading
Great UI/UX is a stack of small decisions. Instead of only reading about them, you use a screen that breaks a guideline, write down what felt off, and then compare it with the rule. The app includes 23 lessons, 68 annotated topics, 100 common mistakes, 7 principles, 5 labs, and 396 quiz questions. Everything is available in English, Japanese, and Korean.
Every lesson has five steps
- Try it: open a sample app at full size and get a task. The screen you use here breaks a guideline on purpose.
- Write it down: before you see the answer, note what felt strange.
- See why: your notes sit next to the rule, along with the decision, the reasoning behind it, and what breaks if you flip it.
- Compare: switch between the broken screen and the fixed one in the same spot and see the difference.
- Write what you learned: save a sentence you can reuse next time. Notes can be copied as text or exported as a Markdown file.
Three tabs
- Learn: a course of 23 lessons, one design decision each, such as bottom compose buttons, swipe to delete, grouped toolbar items, search placement, and how many tabs to use.
- Notes: everything you wrote during lessons, in one place.
- Library: browse 68 topics, including toolbars, text, tab bars, sheets, and menus, as illustrations. Tap any part of a picture to see its rule and the reasoning, and open a working example for every topic.
Who it is for
- Developers and designers building apps who want a reason behind every layout choice
- Anyone who has read the guidelines but found that little of it stuck
No sign in is required, and everything is built into the app, so it works offline. Your progress and notes are stored only on your device.
